Based from our central Essex headquarters we offer full UK and European coverage through our eight hi-tech strategically located warehouses. All our teams are highly trained and CRB vetted ensuring a quality service from collection through to delivery and final positioning.

The brief

A leading technology client appointed Luna as chosen partner to project lead the logistical operation of a major financial institution’s data centre relocation from Leicestershire to Cambridgeshire.

The project presented the following key challenges:

  • To relocate from a single point location to new multi-sited facilities
  • To allow uninterrupted operational activity for the client throughout
  • Accurate planning of resources split effectively across three sites
  • Extreme care in moving delicate and high cost equipment
  • To achieve the entire project over a tight three week timeframe

The Project

Luna worked in partnership with the client from the outset to clearly scope the project and timeframe. The brief stipulated the existing client hosted servers to be de-installed, re-positioned across two new facilities and fully operational within a tight three week deadline.

Before any work could take place intensive preparation was required to ensure a smooth logistical operation from start to finish. This included preparing complex site surveys comprising of integral trek routes, method statements, photographs, transit protective products, specialist equipment requirements and parking constraints for each location.

As part of the initial surveys a critical access constraint was identified at one facility requiring the removal of a first floor security window. This was overcome by the deployment of a HIAB vehicle by Luna.

We allocated an experienced crew to the project, all pre-employment screened, and holding the required construction site certification scheme cards.

The three phases of the project were:

  • De-commissioning of the existing 100+ server racks
  • The relocation and re-positioning to new multi-sites
  • The re-commissioning of all server racks

The Conclusion

Despite many complexities, the three phase data centre relocation was accomplished on time and within budget.

By careful, methodical and meticulous planning any potential risks and hazards were identified and addressed. By executing and sustaining the specialist procedures throughout the relocation phases Luna and our client successfully completed the programme avoiding any disruption to the end client’s mainframe system.

Briege Leahy Luna Director added:

"Throughout the entire planning and execution of the relocation it was a professional team effort that concluded with such a successful project delivery."

Client Chief Operating Officer commented:

"We were filled with complete confidence from the outset and will continue to use Luna and their excellent team for future data centre relocations."
