The brief

Kao Park (above) sits at the heart of Harlow’s newest
generation of science and technology innovation

Luna was chosen by a global air conditioning company to partner for the specialist transport of multiple oversized cooling units from Germany to the UK.

This prestigious project included the collection, delivery and positioning by crane at the newly constructed KAO Park Data Centre, part of the new Harlow Enterprise Zone.

The project presented the following key challenges:

  • Collections to coincide with manufacturing schedule to optimize the vehicles to ensure value for money and minimum disruption
  • Coordination at  KAO Harlow for exact timely off load and positioning by cranes
  • Storage provision, man power and transport as a contingency and at short notice should delays at the construction works be interrupted

The Project

This was an intricate project requiring precise planning and coordination for all parties and stakeholders both in Germany and the UK.

Luna deployed 40 specialist vehicles over a 4-week period, including low loaders and Euroliner trailers, to collect from Germany and transport the multiple units to Harlow in Essex. Each shipment was carefully routed as wide load permits were required across all the European countries involved. The project involved offloading using cranes across different locations over the 15-acre site.  This required expert management ensuring the highest levels of health and safety whilst providing minimal construction downtime to the end client.

The Conclusion

A successful 1st stage project completed on time and within budget with a further three stages allocated to Luna to implement in the near future. The successful outcome was largely down to careful strategic planning together with robust contingency planning and Luna’s expertise in this specialist area.

Briege Leahy Luna Director added:

"We were proud to be one of the first logistics companies delivering into the innovative Kao Park, an exciting time for both Harlow and Luna."

Client Chief Technical Officer commented:

"Luna was the obvious choice to partner with on this project due to their extensive experience and proximity of their distribution centre to KAO Park."
